All hail the 21st century

Through the streets the puppets walk.
They walk the streets by day and by night as well,
Glowing orange and yellow under the neon lamps.
And they never speak.

They just stare straight ahead
And only close their glassy eyes to sleep.

Every puppet in the city lives this way.
That’s how it has been for a very long time
And what came before, no one remembers.

Jobs are plentiful and basic
And passion has been swept away with poverty.
No one remembers whether life is better this way.

Soon, one day, you’ll wake up.  And the first thing you’ll realise
Is the heart of the world beating inside your chest,
Broken.

Time to move, time to stand still -
Time to sit and have a coffee, just a short one.
Time for your life to tick by, while you watch.
But really it’s not your life anymore.
You’ve been caught like everyone else,
And no-one else is complaining, so you’d better be quiet now.
Otherwise they’ll see you’ve unplugged yourself
And they’ll take away your batteries again.
