You my parent, I your child

The mother looked at her child as he lay sleeping:
“You haven’t a care in the world,” she sighed.
“In your dreams, do rainbows dance? Are unicorns leaping?”
She gently rocked the cradle, and quietly cried.
“I want to be there,” she whispered.
“I wish that I could be you for just one night.
“Sleep tight.”

In her own bed, her head laying sideways
On a soft downy pillow,
She drifted through a dream-world haze.
The sky was a rich, deep blue and the clouds seemed to billow.

Rainbows danced and unicorns leapt,
And underneath this blissful canopy
The mother lay down on the soft grassy hillside
And slept.

In her dreams she could hear the voice of the Universe
Rumbling around and inside her.
At first she felt safe.  But then she heard its words:

“I need a holiday,” it said.
“The Earth can surely turn itself for one night.”
What followed was the most desolate silence she had ever known.

“Wait!” she screamed into the absence.  But the darkness was so complete
Her voice made no sound.  When she awoke, she was sobbing as only the abandoned can sob.

The mother looked at her child as he lay sleeping:
“Your world is so fragile,” she sighed.
“I will be your dancing rainbows and leaping unicorns.”
She gently rocked the cradle, and quietly cried.
“I will always be there,” she whispered.
“Every night.
“Sleep tight.”
